Should I be tweeting? 3 questions to help you decide

By Wolfgang Pinther on July 1, 2009

“What is Twitter?” That question is a bit outdated. Now, it’s “Should I be tweeting?”

Pinther.Wolfgang.Blog2We’ve all heard too many times, “Everybody is on twitter so you better be on it too…” I’m not a fan of doing something just because “everyone” else is. You wouldn’t jump off a bridge just because everyone else was jumping. Ok, I know it isn’t exactly the same, but there are some things you should consider before leaping on the bandwagon.

Consider this: 10 years ago facebook didn’t exist. And 10 years before that, neither did the Web. Today, more than 100 million users log on to facebook each day. And who knows what the new craze will be in 10 years from now. But today there are over 32 million users on twitter, tweeting about their personal lives, their businesses, the economy, trends, fashion, finance – anything you can imagine. International companies like JetBlue (JetBlue) and Dell (DellOutlet) to local, privately owned businesses like Kunin Associates (KuninAssociates) and South Beach’s Clinton Hotel (ClintonHotel) are all using twitter to expand their reach to their audience.

So, should you be tweeting? Here are 3 questions that can help you decide.

  1. Can you commit 10 minutes a day?
  2. Can you provide relevant information?
  3. Can you be patient and understand that networking takes time to build trust and relationships?

If you answered yes three times, then you are a good candidate to be tweeting. I absolutely don’t believe that twitter will increase your business three-fold or that you’ll have 20,000 followers within a month. But I do believe that twitter is another way to increase your internet footprint. Twitter should be used as a way to provide valuable information to people who are interested in what you have to say. In addition, you can promote your blog, services and products, but you need to make sure that the feeds you are posting will add value.

Look, if you can’t commit to the time or you don’t exactly know what you would post, then hold off. It would be a waste of time to start twittering blindly without a plan.  Twitter isn’t a necessity; it’s just another tool to have your voice heard. For it to be effective, you need to have a consistent message, goals, and build your community with appropriate followers.

With that said, I’m happy to announce that Kaufman, Rossin & Co. (KaufmanRossin) is now on twitter. Follow us for feeds from our blog, industry news, firm announcements and events, and more.

Questions about twitter or other social networking sites? I’d be happy to help and/or direct you to resources that know more. And you can follow me (Wolf_Pinther) on twitter.
